This Old House...

...is the house my Dad grew up in. My Mother and I decided to drive up to Looneyville, WV to see it on Mother's Day... really just to have an excuse to get out in the country on a pretty day.

We didn't expect it to be in good shape because we'd heard from other people that it was not. Neither of us had seen the house in many years, but we didn't really expect it to look this bad. Believe it or not, this house is still occupied. The gate was closed, and from the looks of the place neither of us thought it was a good idea to try to get any closer than the road. heavy sigh

The last house I occupied in Chas. has suffered too. It was for sale the last time I was there for a school reunion and I called about it. The realtor told me it had been flooded by burst pipes and the hardwood floors were ruined. It almost made me cry. My parents paid $12,500 for that house in 1952 and it was for sale for $ 85K, and reduced due to the floors. I hear now that the neighborhood is crumbling fast. So sad.

Yeah. Things change... time marches on. I think it's normal to have sadness about losing things from the past. But I also think it's necessary to just shake it off and move on. I've seen people get seriously upset about historic buildings being torn down... or even trees being cut down. In another generation, somebody will be nostalgic about something that is new for us.

BTW, I wish you could see more of the house in the photo. In its day, it was a really pretty little farmhouse.
