Portrait Tests

I've been taking pictures of friends in order to test out new portrait lighting schemes. I don't shoot much of this kind of thing in my work, so it's interesting for me to try new stuff.

Sticky Wheels

I distinctly remember the first time I saw a skateboard with urethane wheels. I was a photography student in North Carolina in the 70s. Who would have thought at that time that someday I'd be in the factory where the inventors of urethane wheels were still turning out product. My life is fun.

Taking Pictures in Times Square

New fisheye...

... messing around with a new 10mm Nikon Fisheye (the Althouse lens)... trying to figure out what it's good for other than making Bonnie look funny.

Backlit Saturn

No, I didn't shoot this.
I'm always telling people to try shooting stuff backlit and see what happens. It can be more interesting than front lighting. Here's an example from the ever-fascinating site "Astronomy Picture of the Day".

Snowy Evening

I saw this when I went out to the street to get the mail. That's not a sunset... it's the wrong direction. I guess it's city lights bouncing off of clouds. I had to crank the ISO up way high to take this since I didn't have a tripod in my pocket. Thus the image is extremely grainy.

Blenko Apple - Two Bites

This apple was in an office where I was working recently. When I had some downtime I took several angles because I was really interested in the way the daylight came through and the reflected in the wood. Here are two, which illustrate the way you can get really different images just by changing the angle a little bit.

FestivALL! - Blues, Brews, & Barbecues

The great Sonny Landreth was in town today. I was excited. I learned about him from Eric Clapton's Crossroads Festival DVD. I really love electric blues guitar. The man's technique is astonishing.
