The trick to photographing deer is to do it from the car. Deer are not afraid of automobiles... even ones with funny pink animals hanging out the windows pointing shiny silver thingies at them. Get out of the car and they'll scatter... but you can drive right up to them.
I found that out in Blackwater Falls Park in 1999. The deer were 10 feet from the car, but when I opened the door to get a better view with the camera, they fled.

I see deer here all the time, but I can never get a good shot of them. These are wonderful!
