Yes, it is a manhole cover. I salute Tom for coming up with that. I thought it would be impossible. It's a very tricky photograph. I tilted it on its side to make it more difficult. Those are not actually "bumps" you see. They are depressions in a flat surface, but once you have seen them as bumps, it's hard to make your brain accept them as holes.
When I saw this on Wednesday, I saw holes. And, I saw the manhole guess and concurred. I just remembered to come back and see if it really was a manhole. As soon as the page loaded, I thought Rick had changed the picture 'cause it was bumps...not holes! And, reading through the comments, I find that it's some scary optical illusion. I can't see the holes anymore. Yikes.

By the way, Adam, you're not eligible since you were there when I shot it so don't get any big ideas.
Is it that metal grate that is sometimes found around trees? It gets filled in when it gets closer to the sidewalk... Is that it?
These are always difficult, which is why they are so interesting. A non-slip surface (eg, floor, entrance footpath, sidewalk etc)?
It looks like part of a sculpture, the criss-cross lines look like marble.....
Looks like the bottom of a trivet.

I was thinking of the manhole cover as well
Manhole cover - or the soles of new hiking boots?
A ceiling?
By the way, still no takers in three days at guessing my latest mystery photo.
hm, manhole cover is convincing... i've seen this before, and i can't put my finger on it...
Inside of a waffle iron?
Wow, I definitely think it is a manhole cover now that the other posters I have suggested that!
manhole cover is my guess

Glad you said that because I looked at it seeing bumps and then holes...then couldn't figure out which it was. lol
The optical illusion of this one is a hoot! You are right: I cannot see them as depressions, no matter how hard I try.
How wierd, I don't see anything BUT depressions....whoa..I'm off to stare at it again...
Dang, NOW I see them!
I can see both. Originally i saw bumps, but then i figured out the rust, and then i saw the indents. I love optical illusions!
