Remember friends, as you pass by...

I hadn't seen this marker before. It was in a part of the cemetery that used to be all overgrown. The "Father" was broken off, but someone placed it back in place.

At the bottom it says:
Remember friends, as you pass by
As you are now, so once was I
As we are now, soon you shall be
Prepare for death and follow me

In the old days, people were creative with their headstones. Nowadays they put plastic doodads on them. Oh well.

Believe it or not, that thing has a photocell on the back, presumably so that it will light up at night.

Memorial Day 2007 Weekend

Grave concerns on a sunny day. Every Memorial Day weekend my Mom and I visit three cemeteries. One of them is way up on a hill out in the country. It helps to have 4WD to get there. This panorama was made from 3 photos. Click to see a much larger version.

It's traditional for me to take a photo of a daisy in the barbed wire at this location. I did the first one when I was in high school.

On the way to visit my Grandma Allen's grave, we pass her old house. It hasn't been in the family since the 60s. I keep expecting every year to see that it's fallen down. Somebody keeps working on it but the progress is painfully slow.

UPDATE: Click on the "Memorial Day" tag below to see previous year's entries.

NYC Leftovers

Here are a few shots from New York I'd like to squeeze in here before it's too late. I left NYC on Wednesday morning.

I woke up early on Wednesday to see the sun shining into my Pod. That's actually the sun shining on white tile. Weird innit?

This little park was part of a synagogue across the street from The Pod Hotel.

Here are three random scenes I noticed walking over to Rockefeller Center. The clear air and the morning sun just made everything seem special.

Ersatz Whitewater

Well... the whitewater is real I guess, but the river is man-made. I was up at Deep Creek, MD today to photograph a house for a contractor and he told me I should go over and take a look at the new kayak run. Man, those folks are moving some water. The water is re-circulated... it's not an actual river.

Today, Part 2

Here are a few more shots from the Today Show this morning. I was only there for a few minutes, but I got to see quite a bit.

It's hard to believe that I shot these this morning and tonight I'm in the mountains of western Maryland.

Today

I had a little time to kill this morning so I popped over to the "Today Show" to see if the crowd was bad and I found that there was hardly any crowd at all. I easily got really close up. Here's the back of Al Roker's head. You can see that the TV camera is pointing right at me. I didn't plan this, it just happened that Al walked right up and started talking to this guy in front of me. You can see me on the monitor there on the right.

Here's a blow-up of the monitor.

Smile, you're texting at Lombardi's

Mmmm... Lombardi's pizza!

Around the corner from Lombardi's... a rice pudding bar? What next?

Bisazza!

I was invited to this cool party at the Bisazza tile showroom in Soho. I got way more photos than I could show here. Here's a sample.

New York in the Spring

I'm back in the Big Apple. I'm actually here to work this time... because, as everyone knows, there aren't any professional photographers in NYC so they have bring people in to do this work. [cough, cough]

Above is that same old view of the Holland Tunnel I always take when entering the city. The tunnel traffic was a lot worse than I expected on Sunday.

I'm staying at this interesting place called The Pod Hotel. The rooms are... uhhh... very pod-like.

The Pod has a roof garden. How cool.

Mmmm... tapas!
