Anybody know what this thing is? Seen on a tree in Huntington, WV. Is it an apple that somebody drew geometric patterns on??

I would've guessed it to be some sort of crabapple... but I've never seen those sort of designs and bumps before.. maybe it's got a disease?

A Michigander might call it a petoskey apple.

Even though there's no such thing.

Don't fall asleep near it.

Money may not grow on trees, but red soccer balls do.

Whatever it is, save it for the Christmas tree

Kousa Dogwood

I think this might be it; maybe the one in your picture isn't fully developed yet?

They won't last until Christmas, unless you dry them, I suppose. But if you have any deer nearby, they think it's a tasty snack.

See the last image on this page for a picture of kousa dogwood berries that look quite similar to yours.

Or see just the image here.

Well.. finally we know! Thanks people. Jack can now tell the owner of the tree what they have. My mother's 2 regular dogwoods are both gone due to the blight.
