Shooting fish in a barrell...

... is not a good metaphor for this post. It implies that it's really easy. I enjoy taking photos of (avoiding the word shooting here) fish in tanks. It's not easy to even get one in focus much less get a good composition. But if you persevere, you can have some great serendipity moments where it seems that everything comes together. A lot of photography is like that.

By the way, if I did this in the studio with beautiful controlled flash lighting it would be a lot easier and the results would be a lot prettier. The glass would be clean and the images would be grainless and perfect. These were shot in the Wal-Mart store on grocery night so it was a little more challenging.

There is a tropical fish tank at the PF Chang's restaurant here in Raleigh. They have some of the most amazing looking fish, and they are so tame they will come right up to the glass and start at you. Last time I was there, I wished I had my camera. I think I'll make a special trip there, and take pics. They won't be as good as yours, but maybe I'll get lucky.

Wow! I couldn't imagine exhibiting that much patience to photograph fish, especially in a Wal*Mart!

A couple of those fish look like they're about to say something!

cehwiedel... when shooting in stores, I use a camera I can hide in my hand. You'll be pretty obvious shooting with a Rebel XT in the store! But it's a great camera... you'll like it I'm sure.
