Walking in New York

I couldn't get a taxi so I decided to make the 20 minute walk to the hotel from the Javits Center. This was lucky, because I got a few interesting shots along the way.

Great series, Rick. And a great lesson for us would-be photographers out there: get on your feet and walk around! We can't all be in New York City but there's art everywhere around us, if we just choose to look.

That's true... sometimes when I've been hurting for a blog post, I'll just take a walk around the block and I'll usually find something to shoot.

I am most intrigued by that lamp post.

The lamp photo looks somehow fake doesn't it? But it's just a shot of the lamppost looking up a narrow NY street. All is in shadow except for the clouds in the distance, which gives it a flat, 2-D appearance somehow.

It is a great looking shot. This whole NY series is so crisp and interesting.

But what struck me was that, coincidentally, I had posted a drawing on my blog a few days back that has a very similar lamppost. I've been trying to figure out where the location of the setting might be from clues in the work itself, including scrutinizing this lamppost, but to no avail. Some things you just don't get to know, I guess.
