Visiting the Tampa Aquarium

The "hurricane" didn't really turn out to be much of a problem. It rained quite a bit today so we found some indoor entertainment at the aquarium.
UPDATE: Welcome Instapundit readers! See more Florida blogging on my main page... including photos of the Victorian era Tampa Bay Hotel.

Beautiful shots of aquarium life! How did you get enough light without flashing the glass and a fast enough shutter speed so that the animals aren't blurred? Those pictures don't even appear to be through glass.

White sand. I remember that from my Tampa trip in the early Nineties.

Well Dianne... that's a complicated question. First, I would never use flash for this sort of thing. It would reflect on the glass and generally lend a very artificial look to everything. My little camera goes up to 1600-ISO speed. I have all sorts of little tricks up my sleeve to shoot in low light. I don't have a tripod with me, so I brace the camera against the glass to hold it still... and I use my hand to shade the glass to prevent reflections.... just like you would if you were trying to look through a glass from the outside-in... you know, you'd lean in and put your hand up next to your eye so you could see in. You probably do that without thinking about exactly why you are doing it. Also... I might shoot 10 or 20 blurred shots for every one that's not blurred. It's digital ya know... no film cost... just keep shooting. One of my nephews was complaining to me today about how many of his shots were blurred. I told him that if he came away from this excursion when 5 or 6 really great shots, that would be success. That's not what he wanted to hear, but that's the way a professional would look at it. It's a very difficult shooting situation, so just keep banging away at it and try to get a few good ones. I posted 5 shots. I actually had perhaps 10 or 15 that I might want to show anybody from the entire 250 exposures I made at the aquarium. Actually, if all I got was that one sea-turtle shot, I'd be happy with that. I'm just thrilled to have that picture.

So true. I've tried this a few times at the Newport Aquarium near Cincinnati and was happy with one or two decent (I'll refrain from using the word "good") shots.

Me too Judy... I feel like I'm mining the same old veins at home over and over. I love to get out and aim the camera at some new stuff.

Awesome shots!

Are you still in Florida now? How bout the storms?

Rick Lee said...

This thing went to the north of us. So far it's been less than we expected. I thought it would rain all day today too, but so far no rain at all.

Don't think I was denigrating the Chas. photos - I love them too...LOL

The last shot: Royal Terns? My tern I.D. skills admittedly need some work!

Rick Lee said...

Amy... all I remember is that they were some kind of tern. That's far enough in the ballpark for me. These birds were injured. If you look close you can see the right wing of that one bird is damaged.
