You're not insane. I agree with you. I kept staring at this photo because I know I've seen this before, but I just couldn't put my finger on it. It has to be an escalator. I think the only way he got the photo was if the escalator was stopped. If it was in motion. I'm amazed he could get that close and not get sucked in.
Ding, ding, ding! The escalators have it. And John is correct that the escalator was not moving at the time, allowing me to stand where I wanted to and shoot as I pleased.

My first thought was the interior of a piano, showing the wire strings, but the "strings" look too squared off for that.
