Wildlife

When I went to check the mailbox this morning, I saw a hawk circling close overhead. (not a vulture, which are common as dirt around here... I know the difference) The local crow population was going nuts.
I went back inside to get my good camera with a long telephoto. The hawk had moved up to high altitude so I never got a very good photo... ...but just then this fellow came trotting down Hunters Ridge Road. I've gotta spend more time on the front porch with a camera. Who knows what I'll see. Oh by the way... more deer here.

I'll ask my sister the birdwatcher what kind of a hawk it is.

I think it's a red tail hawk, but I'm not sure.

Rick, we have a red-tailed hawk that has been living on or near our cul-de-sac for about 3 years now. Our population of squirrels, snakes, frogs, etc. has gone waaaaay down since he moved in. Now and then he flies over our pool and the shadow he creates is immense! I have taken dozens of photos of him, but none is very clear or close.

My sister says:

"This is a toughy. I'm going to guess that it's a red-tailed hawk. There's the streaking across the chest which is typical of red-tails. I can't see the color of the tail or if it is red or striped or whatever, but it looks as if it could be a solid color. The reddish-brown also suggest a red-tail or at least makes it a serious possibility.

"That's the best I can do."

I wish I could sit on my porch and watch critters! How lucky for you!
