I'm no botanist, but at a guess that is a dogwood flower. It does indeed grow on trees.
I think it was some sort of special dogwood... like "Chinese Dogwood" or something similar. I just love that funny ball in the middle with the geometric pattern on it.

I shot this a few months ago. I can't remember what it is. I think it was on a tree.
