Bird's nest blogging

Glenn Reynolds, ever the trend setter... has a post about a bird's nest. So here's mine. I shot this a few weeks ago while on location at a juvenile detention facility (jail). I was shooting for the architects who designed the new facility. This was a little serendipitous zoology lesson for the kids... the robin built her nest right behind the bars, up against the window glass.

Perhaps she and her babies will fare better then the nest on my porch wreath. I took a photo of the nest recently, and will post it soon. Yesterday I noticed some moss and twigs on the floor under the nest, and it was totally ruined. I picked up the remnants of the nest and out fell a perfectly formed but featherless baby bird, which looked like its neck had been broken and cut. I wonder if some other larger bird had attacked the nest.

You think your local hawk has a taste for robin? A few years ago when we had a hawk hanging around, I used to see neat little piles of mourning dove feathers under my neighbor's bird feeder.

I suppose it is possible. He would have had to come up on my porch, with a roof and a deep overhang, so I hope he didn't do that! I feel so sorry for the mother bird, who fussed at me everytime I went onto the porch before this happened.

Your post inspired me to put up a couple pictures of my bird's nest on my blog, www.baciana.blogspot.com. I love your site and look forward to the new pictures every day, especially grocery night!

Hi Rick.

Not sure if I've said hi yet, but I've been lurking for awhile. I love your photos. When I saw the bird today, it made me think of how many of us enjoy freedom (emotionally) even when we're "locked up" in a situation. OK, that sounded weird; it made more sense when it was a visceral reaction to your photo and not a sentence. What can I say? I'm tired...
