Hmmmmm, at first I thought it was a dried up vine, but I see it is metal of some sort. Could be the Victorians' idea of a joke, as it sort of looks like a bug in camouflage mode.
Susan is absolutely correct. I found several of these weird little tiny things attached to a utility pole behind my studio. When I looked at close-up photos fo the things I was really surprised at what they looked like blown up. They almost looked like little dead animals in person (because of the feet), but you can definitely see they are plant life in the photos. I think that someone has pulled a vine down off of the utility pole, leaving these little attachment devices behind (dead).

It looks like a very odd door handle...

Hint: it's not metal
I think it's the remnants of a vine that uses little sticky pads to cling to surfaces like walls. Virginia creeper is such a vine.
Susan, what would you say if I told you this item is less than half an inch long?
I still think it's the sticky pad tendril of a vine. I went out and took a picture
of the Virginia creeper in my yard.

I guess I should have gone with my first thought, huh?
