It's a bug-eat-bug world

I was out in rural West Virginia today when I saw this weird little scene. What I thought was a dragonfly was eating a large bumblebee. Or sucking it dry or something. I checked with my entomological consultant, Peggy Powell who told me that this is a "Robber Fly" and probably the variety known as the "Hanging Thief".

Did you shoot that with the F30? Or did you break out the "big" camera?

Those are incredible pics. How close were you to the action?

"How close were you to the action?" About an inch or so.

"Or did you break out the "big" camera?"
I was actually shooting with the big camera in my hand at the time but when I saw this, I put it down and got the Fuji F30 out of my pocket. The macro lens on it is soooo good... and when shooting live insects, I really don't like the idea of getting my head right down next to the thing. The bugs don't like it either. They are much more likely to fly off if you get your face down there next to them. I guess they can smell your breath or something. If you put the little camera in your hand down next to them, for some reason they just tend to ingore it.

Wow, amazingly graphic and kind of scary. Other than that great detail. You manged to get right in his face during dinner, which I'm sure he appreciated ;-)

I hate bumblebees. So this picture doesn't look too scary to me.

On the other hand, geez! Amazing detail.
