Chris' for hot dogs

All good Charlestonians know there's only one place in town to get the authentic West Virginia hot dog. These are just a couple of quick shots. The place is a treasure trove of images. I need to go back and do the place justice sometime when I'm not in a rush.

Guess I'm not a good Charlestonian yet... Never been there. Where's it located?

I haven't been there is about 20 years. I wasn't even sure it was still open. I need to get out more.

Stacey... it's on West Washington Street.. on the left hand side of the street in the 200 block. Oncee... Chris' was closed for a while (about a year or more??) after the old man died, but then the daughter re-opened it. It's never been the same place... I mean, a lot fewer people eat there, but it's still exactly the same re: the food and atmosphere. I can remember 20 years ago you couldn't get a seat at lunch time and you might see just anybody there. Working-stiffs and professionals side-by-side at the counter. It was really something back then. Even though my studio is just a block away, I rarely eat there. The hot dogs and fries are just too awful for the arteries. But I'll go in sometimes just to make sure they still taste the same.

Hmmm... I was not aware that there existed an "authentic West Virginia hot dog." You learn something new every day. If I'm ever in WV again, I'll be sure to try one!

Is the fried bologna sandwich still the official state sandwich?

I'm not being facetious, either. I've family over in WV and they're the ones that told me that.

mmmm...

Chris' hot dogs and fries. Yum!

Now I have a craving that would make Harold & Kumar proud.

Julie... FYI... an authentic West Virginia hot dog has chili sauce and cole slaw on it. I don't know what the heck Chris' does to those fries, but they sure aren't like fast food fries. You should see a large order. It would cover a dinner plate. Oh geez, I'm salivating.

You're salivating? My whole chin is wet now.

I'll plan to go there when I get back to Chas. for my reunion.

Last time we tried it when in Charleston, it was closed !! So happy to hear that Chris' is still in business !! Coming back up in May - and will definitely be there !! Best dogs EVER - one of the reasons we hated to move back in 1980 !!!
