Bubbles

People seem to like it when I give a little photography lesson with the photos. What's interesting about these shots? First, I put the subject and camera in a situation so that the subject would be backlit. It makes for a more dramatic image if the subject has a nice halo of light... even though you've been taught since childhood to have the sun at your back. However, it does require a little bit of skill to get the exposure right in such a situation. The second thing you might not realize about these shots is that they are shot with a really long telephoto lens. I was quite far away from the children. I didn't need to use a telephoto, I chose to. It helps to isolate the subject from any distracting background.

Tamarack Lighting

I was working at Tamarack on Thursday. During a break, I found this composition. The lighting was created by a great West Virginia artist, Jeff Fetty.

Grave concerns on a sunny day - 2006

I blogged about this last year also. On Memorial Day weekend, my Mom and I visit some really out-of-the-way cemeteries which require 4WD.

A lamb on the stone always means an infant is buried there. In the old sections of the cemeteries, there are a lot of infants.

After the Storm

We had quite a storm blow through today. As usual, the aftermath was photogenic.

CAB5 Happened

It was a small gathering of Charleston Area Bloggers... but it was momentous because Sharon of the great "Adventures of a Domestic Engineer" blog actually showed up. We were awed. We're not worthy... seriously.

CAB5 for Friday

Some of the guys have decided to have a meetup of the Charleston Area Bloggers on Friday. I'm super busy with work but I think I can be there. 8am to 9-ish on Friday at Taylor Books in the cafe. Be there.

Weed Flower

I went for a walk in the woods yesterday. I thought perhaps I'd find some interesting wildflowers or insects. I didn't. This ordinary flowering weed was the best I could come up with.

Downtown Sunset

When I came out of my niece's dance recital, there was a nice sunset. When you see a great sunset, be sure to turn around in the opposite direction and see the stuff that's lit by that wonderful warm light.
UPDATE: I'm now referring to this principle as "Rick's Sunset Maxim". Also here.

May Sky on Hunters Ridge

I stopped on the way to the grocery store last night... just as a storm was passing... to record this May sky for posterity.

Flower Back

This was actually in the produce department of Krogers, but I just didn't feel like including it with Produce Blogging.

Produce Blogging #51

Because Thursday night is grocery night! That's the first time I've noticed aparagas with the seeds popping out.
