Bear Post

Up here at Snowshoe, the staff don't seem to get too excited about bear sitings. They seem to be about as common as squirrels at home. We watched these two from the comfort of a balcony as they puttered around a construction site. Later, while having dinner at "Ember" we watched an employee chasing one out of the parking lot. I for one, was very watchful when returning to the car.

I've only seen a Black Bear on 3 occasions in my life, and each of my sightings were at Snowshoe. The 1st was a big one crossing the street near Silvercreek in the snow; the second was one feeding on some berries at the bottom of the hill near the Snowshoe sign; the 3rd was while driving up the hill at night and one lumbered across the street and jumped over the guardrail right in front of me. Each time was special.

We were at a convention near Gatlinburg, TN, once, when a bear came along and started rummaging through the park's trash cans. There was a park official ushering people away, but I was surprised at how many people tried to get close to grab a photo with their point-and-shoots.

One of my favorite activities is to watch the raccoons rummaging through the dumpster in my apartment complex (from a safe distance, of course). We call it the Coon Cafe....all you can eat and open 24 hours. I can't imagine looking out and seeing a black bear!

I feel sorry for the bears that are looking through dumpsters and drinking from those run-off drains.

But I agree, the best place to watch them if from that high-up vantage point!

I can't believe that on our shoot last week we missed seeing a mama and her cubs by just minutes, and you got to see one from your balcony! Thanks for sharing!

We had one of these in our front yard a few years ago. Since then my wife refuses to go into the woods. Pity, since our place is pretty much surrounded by forest.
