Bright lights, empty aisles

I had to go to the grocery store tonight, which is not my usual grocery shopping night. It might have been because it was Wednesday... it might be because of the post holiday slowdown... but the place was empty.

These guys may look like office workers, but they are actually construction workers in a cherry picker cleaning the glass on the other side of this new building in Huntington, WV.

Morning Sun

The sun came up in a particularly gorgeous way this morning. Everywhere I looked things had a beautiful glow. I shot these pictures of the St John's Episcopal Church while stopped at a traffic light. The Payne Building on the Lee Street Triangle was reflecting the sun off of its marble face like a mirror.

Gilt Complex

All good Charlestonians know there's only one place in town to get the authentic West Virginia hot dog. These are just a couple of quick shots. The place is a treasure trove of images. I need to go back and do the place justice sometime when I'm not in a rush.

Charleston area bloggers meeting at Taylor Books

There's a somber mood in Charleston this morning as we woke to find out that only one of the trapped miners survived. We went to bed last night believing that only one had died. The photo shows an earlier and a later edition of the Charleston Gazette. I still haven't heard exactly where the miscommunication occurred... but of course it only made the bad news that much worse to take.

I'm waiting for the other guys to show up. Here comes Stacey Abshire now.

Blenko Glass

From a recent trip to the Blenko Factory Store. Glass can be really tricky to shoot. You have to be aware that you aren't shooting light that's bouncing off of a subject as in most cases, but you are shooting light that's coming though the object as well as glancing off in specular hightlights. It's all very tricky but if you get your head in the right place it's a lot of fun. The apple is a carefully lit studio shot, but the last two were simply shot with the sunlight streaming in the store window.
