One is tempted to make a stink, but as with your situation, there's usually time to get your photos before the security guards can get to you. I'm sure that you know you have the law on your side as long as you are on a public sidewalk or street, but for some reason these companies insist on this silliness.
After 9-11, there was a tendency for everyone to assume that a photo-taker was a terrorist. I was approached many times while taking photos in public in 2001 and 2002, but as time goes on I find that this hardly ever happens anymore.

So I will continue my unofficial survey by asking, how often do you encounter problems with security when you are photographing a building?
I recently was shooed away from an interesting building in downtown Denver. Luckily I had already finished when he asked me to leave.
