  4. I'm having trouble getting the size of the object in question. The shaft seems rather long and thn for this to be some sort of router bit, but that's the way I'm leaning.

  6. I think it's a ruby, and it rides in that groove. It looks like those jewels that are in watches. Something to do with time?

  9. I'm going to go with fondue forks, just because that answer served me well in the past. That and despite searching for things like "glass bead," "ruby," and "metal shaft," I was unable to get anything closely resembling that.

  10. It's a Zeiss tungsten carbide shaft with ruby sphere..... which is the stylus part of Coordinate Measuring Machine CMM used in the machine tool industry to take very accurate measurements. Thanks for the clues, Toby!

  11. Ha! Page the detective has cracked the case. It's a super-accurate measuring device which is used to build computer models of existing parts. Such as seen here.
