Mystery #82

Do you know what this is? Post your guesses in the comments. I see it every day. I expect a lot of people see something similar.

  1. I'm completely stumped. It looks to me like some kind of rivets in rusted metal. Maybe that'll help someone else...

  2. No clue. . .yet. But I'm glad to see this return to the mystery photos.

  3. See, you made me think I was smart with the mushroom mystery!!! I knew that one immediately. This one is hard. I have no clue. If it we just one "thing" and they weren't covered with that misty looking stuff and rust underneath, I would say it looks kind of like the joystick on my camera.
I am going to stare at it for a while longer and see if anything comes to me.

  4. It's a cover on a water meter.

  5. My best guess is a manhole cover.

  6. I was going to say manhole cover, too. Looks like it's been sprayed with paint like the utility companies often do to mark something

  7. I was going to say some sort of cover to a water hook-up??? Like on the side of a building???

    Interesting mystery photo...

  8. Looks like another version of tamper-resistant screws -- the kind you have to have a special screwdriver to turn.

Is the blue due to paint or lighting?

  9. Notice that Stanton said "It's a cover on a water meter."... not "IS IT a cover on a water meter?". He's not guessing. A while back the water company installed these remote transmitters on the meters so that the meter-reader just drives through the area and the meter communicates with his receiver via wireless. Those odd shaped things are the plastic antenna covers on the old-fashioned iron cover. For some reason, they sprayed blue paint on many of them.

  10. But they could require a special screwdriver to remove, right?

Can you smell the desperation? Dang, I liked my guess.

  11. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a special tool for that, but it'd be a pretty big screwdriver since those heads are about 2 inches across.
